Public Works Streets & Sanitation

The Public Works Department is responsible for most, if not all, maintenance and repair of city streets and right-of-ways. We are also responsible for the collection and disposal of garbage and brush within city limits as well as maintaining the city sewer collection.

Debris Pickup Information

Please note that all debris pickup, other than household garbage, does not have a scheduled pickup day and will be picked up as the truck gets to that area.  We do not take calls for special pickup requests.  Please be patient and it will get picked up as soon as possible. Please make sure that all yard clippings and roadside debris are placed in bags in order to prevent these items from entering our storm drains which in turns enters our streams.
Citizens are encouraged to help keep their properties free of debris and litter and to notify City Officials of littering and erosion control issues.

Chunk the Junk

Each year in June, the city hosts a city-wide clean-up day (Chunk the Junk) in which everyone is invited to come help us pick up and dispose of litter around our city. This aims to significantly improve the overall cleanliness and appearance of our city by removing litter, debris, and waste from public spaces, thereby enhancing the aesthetics, public health, and overall quality of life for residents while also promoting environmental awareness.

Report Illicit Dumping

To report illicit dumping, illicit discharges, and erosion and sediment control violations please contact the Tuscumbia Public Works Department by calling (256) 386-5674 or emailing jkendrick@cityoftuscumbia.org.

Sewer Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s

  1. DO – Place fats, oils and grease in a container and in the trash.
  2. DO – Wipe down pots and pans before placing in the dishwasher.
  3. DO – Place a wastebasket near the toilet and dispose of solid waste in the trash.
  4. DO – Use a strainer over all sewer drains to keep foreign objects out of your sewer pipes.
  5. DO – Locate your home’s sewer cleanout. If you do not have a cleanout, consider having one installed.
  6. DO – Keep your cleanout exposed so your pipes can be cleaned and inspected.
  7. DO – Call 811 before doing any excavation work at your home.
  8. DO – Report slow draining or clogged lines to the Tuscumbia Public Works Dept. before you call a contractor. The Tuscumbia Public Works can be reached at (256) 386-5674.

Don’ts

  1. DON’T – Pour fats, oils and grease (FOG) down the drain. These items solidify and clog drains.
  2. DON’T – Place pots and pans in the dishwasher with excessive FOG.
  3. DON’T – Flush solid waste down the toilet. Napkins, paper towels, paper, plastics, latex and etc. belong in the trash.
  4. DON’T – Dispose of paint, petroleum oils, pesticides or other chemicals in the sewer system.
  5. DON’T – Dispose of medicine or drugs in the sewer system.
  6. DON’T – Flush “flushable wipes” down the toilet. They do not degrade as fast as tissue and cause blockages.
